I remember as a child that Dalton Rd always seem very busy and was crammed with small food, grocery and clothes shops.
There was Redman's smelling of smoked bacon, coffee and dried fruit.
In front of Woolworth's there was always a large number of prams which were parked on the road. Of - course there wasn' t as many cars about the town then. ( No such thing as a pedestrian precinct.)
Does anyone remember The Sass Shop in Dalton Rd?
My Dad would take me there, he would have a pint of Marsh's Sass while I had a glass of the same. I thought it was great when I was a youngster.
Of-course you couldn't purchase Sass anyway else other than Barow and surrounding areas, as it was produed by Marsh's. I have heard of people having crates sent to them, else where in the county. (Especially pregnant Ladies.)
Busy Bee was a children's clothes shop which I loved to go into, the counter assistant would put the money for your purchase into metal cup. She pulled a lever which sent the cup zipping across to the central cashiers desk via a network of ceiling wires crisscrossing the shop, the cashier put the change into the cup and zipped it back to the counter.
Below are photos of a much earlier Dalton Rd.
In the early 18th century, Dalton Road was literally the road which led from Dalton to the village of Barrowhead. |
